At World Youth Day in Madrid, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed St. Juan de Avila as the 34th doctor of the church. According to Catholic News Agency's report on this proclamation, "the title of 'Doctor of the Church' is bestowed upon a saint whose writings are deemed to be of universal importance to the Church.
